University of Alberta Baseball Club

The University of Alberta Baseball Club was established by way of a formal constitution with Department of Physical Education and Recreation of the University of Alberta in May of 2016.  They have already experienced a “Fall Ball” exhibition season in late 2016 and will compete as a new entrant to the Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) in 2017.

The CCBC is comprised of post-secondary baseball teams from Alberta and British Columbia.  In Alberta, Lethbridge and Calgary have had university affiliated baseball for over a decade now.  U of A is a brand new entrant, providing opportunities for young people from the capital region and northern Alberta to pursue their studies while playing a competitive brand of baseball under the instructions and leadership of several coaches with professional coaching experience. An incredible blessing for both the athletes and their fans is that they will play and practice out of the professional calibre Edmonton Ball Park in the Rossdale area of the North Saskatchewan River valley (Formerly Telus, Ducey, Renfrew stadium.)

Baseball is classified as a “Club Sport” by the University of Alberta, and this is separate and distinct from the Golden Bears and Pandas varsity stream.  As such, the program is on their own in terms of their organization and finances.  Athletes pay a fee to play that is separate from any tuition and other fee costs payable to the University.  An additional source of revenue for the program is sponsorship and charitable donations, of which the program has attracted just over $40,000 to date.

The governance of U of A Baseball occurs by a registered parent society called Academic and Athletic Development.  A.A.D was formed to govern K to 12 athletic/educational sports academies that fall under the rubric of Edmonton Public Schools.  Notable examples are the Vimy Ridge Academy and the Donnan Academy.  University of Alberta Club baseball was seen as an excellent and obvious next step in the laddering of athletic and scholastic opportunities for Alberta youth from the capital region and beyond.

Athletic and Academic Development and the U of A Baseball Club are working with Jordan Cleland Consulting on communicating the value proposition of this new program with prospective sponsors and donors in the Capital Region and throughout Alberta.  Cleland is a former University Baseball player himself (had to leave Canada for these opportunities back in the 1980s and 90s).  Cleland also served as a member of the Olds College executive and over-saw the fund development, communications and athletic department in this post-secondary environment.
